SOLVANG, Calif. – Famed horse trainer Monty Roberts held a healing workshop for veterans, police, fire and first responders. The workshop uses horses to guide the group in finding hope and health.
Monty Roberts is the pioneer of a horse training movement against using whips or violence of any kind to train horses. Labor day weekend he held the life-transforming workshops that guide victims of PTSD and other traumas to heal through connecting with horses.
“I could cry just thinking about it, I cried like a baby,” said veteran Dian Smith.
Dian Smith recounted her first Horse Sense & Healing workshop.
The workshop helped her on her journey to overcome trauma from Desert Storm.
“In being a veteran dealing with Post Traumatic Stress I have been able to learn to be calm. I have been able to learn I don’t need to be afraid,” said Smith.
Monty Roberts, held the free workshop at Flag Is Up Ranch.
“It is amazing, the horses are such therapist there is no describing it!” said Roberts.
Roberts a behavioral science expert uses building trust, intuition, relaxation and breath work to help trauma victims heal. All through his horses.
“One needs to get both the brain and the physical image of the body right or else the horse knows it’s not right,” said Roberts.
Roberts instills in the vets that their PTSD is not incurable.
“When you go to war, relatively normal and you come back abnormal. That is not a disorder that is an injury,” explained Roberts.
An injury Roberts says can be healed. And therefore renamed Post Traumatic Stress Injury.
“It made it feel like it was something I could actual deal with. Like it was something that had a chance of getting better,” said Smith.
“And when they know that injuries heal and disorders don’t they don’t want to hear about a disorder,” said Roberts.
Smith says the workshop transformed her life.
“The first time I came I was a mess, starring at the floor, bouncing my legs. Trusting now one.
And by the end of the clinic, I was sitting comfortably with my legs stretched out in front of me.
Breathing, for the first time I was breathing, which is something that we learn here.”
Roberts teaches the workshops all over the world including for the Queen of England.
“Horse Sense and Healing is an intentional nonprofit dedicated to the heroes in each of the countries,” said Roberts.
Horse Sense and Healing workshops are three-day workshops. Many of those that attend are so transformed by the work they do with Roberts and the horses, they often return for more workshops or volunteers opportunities.
