At Minds At War we have repeatedley heard from our veteran community in Scotland that there is very little help for those suffering from PTSD in that part of the UK. This has prompted us to start a research and development project we are calling “Focus On Scotland” where we are making it our priority to find and contact every veteran support group in Scotland and talk to them about what support they offer, or know of, including for PTSD support and therapy.
We will be bringing you all the info, by developing and regularly updating a Scotland directory of services so that we can help our Scottish veterans to find the support they should be getting.
In addition to compiling a directory of services, as part of our current “Focus On Scotland” project we will be introducing our readers to various groups and personnel individually over the coming days and weeks and encouraging them to join our network providing a safety net for our most vulnerable and forgotten veterans.
We kick off our project with info on a great support group in Glasgow – The Coming Home Centre.
The Coming Home Centre – Glasgow
Based in Glasgow we provide tea, coffee and a daily hot meal free of charge to veterans. Eating a hot meal together is an activity that most veterans can identify with and relate back to their service experiences.
Friendly and welcoming
For the socially isolated, elderly, early service leavers and
transitioning veterans food is the eternal icebreaker and can be a
catalyst for opening up to further help and assistance.
The Centre offers in house support as well as other agency referral where required.
Where it all began
We set out to assist those leaving the services to make the transition from military to civilian life after their time in the forces. As word got out about our services on offer, we found that there was more veterans out there who came to us for assistance for a range of different needs.
We then realised that we would have to adapt our role in the community veterans support to cater for all veterans regardless of when and where they served.
How we help our veterans
The Charity works with veterans at the point of needing assistance with
issues surrounding mental and physical health, homelessness, housing,
pensions, benefits support, employment and training, woodwork and bike
maintenance workshops, adventurous activities, vans for furniture
uplift, removal or recycling, friendship and camaraderie.
